Tanjung Tumunong Hallu Conservation Area

Tanjung Tumunong Hallu Conservation Area is the latest area under the management of Yayasan Sabah (Sabah Foundation) to be introduced to the world.

Announced recently (April 27, 2007), Tanjung Tumunong Hallu will join the ranks of Danum Valley, Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon as yet another important conservation project.

The 5.8 square kilometres area, located some 20 km from Lahad Datu town in the east coast of Sabah, Tanjung Tumunong Hallu Conservation Area is the foundation’s first coastal conservation area. Situated at the tail end of the one-million-hectares concession area, its mangrove swamp, seaside hill forests and coral reef make it a unique site for scientists and tourists alike.

Tanjung Tumunong Hallu conservation area has contrasting natural features, particularly in its mixture of mangrove and dipterocarp forests. It is the only place with a beach and coral reef in the district, apart from its bay and two nearby islands.

A proposed coastal information area at Tanjung Tumunong Hallu had been discussed but the general eco-tourists may have to wait for a year at least before visits are allowed to explore Sabah's latest tropical rainforest conservation area.
